Transcontinental Silk Road Strategies
Routledge. 2021This book analyzes initiatives and concepts initiated by China, Japan and South Korea (the Republic of Korea) toward Central Asia to ascertain their impact on regionalism and regional cooperation in Central Asia. Using the case study of Uzbekistan, the book focuses on the formation of the discourse of engagement with the region of Central Asia through the notion of the Silk Road narrative. The author puts forward the prospects for engagement and cooperation in the region by analyzing initiatives such as the Eurasian/Silk Road Diplomacy of Japan of 1997, the Shanghai Process by China, the Korean corporate offensive, and other so-called Silk Road initiatives such as One Belt One Road (OBOR) or the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The book argues that material factors and interests of these states are not the only motivations for engagement with Central Asia. The author suggests that cultural environment and identity act as additional behavioral incentives for the states' cooperation as these factors create a space for actors in global politics. The book deconstructs Chinese narratives and foreign policy toward smaller states and presents a more balanced account of Central Asian international relations by taking into account Japanese and South Korean approaches to Central Asia. This book encourages wider theoretical discussions of Central Asian-specific forms of cooperation and relationships. It provides a timely analysis of Central Asian international relations and is a helpful reference for researchers and students in the fields of international relations, security studies, Asian politics, global politics, Central Asian Studies and Silk Road studies.
Personal Fabrication
While fabrication technologies have been in use in industry for several decades, expiring patents have recently allowed the technology to spill over to technology-enthusiastic "makers." Personal Fabrication looks at the massive, disruptive changes that are likely to be seen in interactive computing, as well as to computing as a whole. It discusses six main challenges that need to be addressed for this change to take place, and explains researchers in HCI will play a key role in tackling these challenges.
Flying without a Helicopter
iUniverse. 2014“In Flying Without a Helicopter, Joanie Connell details unique challenges faced by young adults and their leaders in the workplace, offering action plans readers can apply to their ‘real work’ situation as they move toward solution. This book was written for you—whether you are a manager, a young adult new to the business world, or a parent of that young adult. Thanks, Joanie, for zooming in on this timely topic!” —Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The One Minute Manager® and Great Leaders Grow “The problems Joanie Connell describes are real. Employees are entering—and leaving—the workplace without the levels of resilience and independence they need to succeed. I recommend Flying without a Helicopter to people who want to develop the life skills needed to succeed in the corporate world (and their parents) and to leaders who want their companies to succeed.” — Daniel Bradbury, CEO coach, investor, life science consultant, and former CEO of Amylin Pharmaceuticals “Managing across generations now is remarkably difficult, as each one approaches timelines, deadlines, conflict, and recognition in different ways. To understand these differences and leverage the creativity within, you could do no better than to read Connell’s Flying without a Helicopter! A wise read for leaders as well as employees, job seekers, and even parents!” —Marshall Goldsmith author of the New York Times and global bestseller What Got You Here Won’t Get You There
