DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) - Sinclair Community College is hosting two free Manufacturing Boot Camps in September to introduce individuals to rewarding, in-demand careers in advanced manufacturing.

The camps are designed for those who want to learn about and get a start in a manufacturing career. Each week-long boot camp offers an overview of the history and lucrative opportunities in computer numerical control (CNC) while providing a hands-on introduction to the basics of safety, programming, setup, and operation of both milling centers and lathes.

Seven students have completed the first boot camp held in August at the Dayton campus and participated in interactive class sections on safety, blueprint reading, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining set-up, precision measurement, operation, and lean manufacturing.

All seven students received training on resume preparation and interviewing. The students graduated from the class earning two Sinclair articulated credit hours and interviewed with manufacturing companies. Three of the students have accepted jobs.

“Sinclair’s first Manufacturing Boot Camp was a tremendous success, and we are excited to offer this free opportunity to more students and job seekers who can learn about careers that offer excellent pay, stability, clean environments, and advancement opportunities,” Ron Ulrich, Chair, Industrial Engineering Technology – Sinclair Community College. “Manufacturing has evolved and there is no better time than now to consider this rewarding career field.”

According to the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services, the advanced manufacturing industry is expected to provide 25,386 average annual job opportunities through the year 2028 with an average annual pay of more than $63,000. In 2020, 13% of all Ohio workers were employed in manufacturing.

Student participants earn two credit hours from the Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) 1100 Manufacturing Boot Camp course. High school teachers and counselors can earn 28 hours of ECU credit. There is no cost for participants. Each week-long session is limited to 12 participants.
