Thomas Mallin

Thomas W. Mallin, president and chief executive officer of the Property & Liability Resource Bureau, will retire at the end of this year.

PLRB said Mallin celebrated 44 years with the organization on Aug. 7. Attendees at the PLRB’s 2022 Claims Conference in San Antonio this April wore “Thanks Tom” pins to commemorate his service to the insurance industry, the nonprofit organization said in a press release.

Richard Long, a PLRB board member and chief executive officer of Western National Insurance, said Mallin was able to lead the organization through unprecedented forced cancellations of in-person conferences in the past two years. He and his team shifted to virtual conferences and significantly increased the number of webinars that allow members to obtain training online, Long said.

Mallin joined the PLRB as its research counsel and later was appointed general counsel. He became president and chief operating officer in 2000. He became CEO when the PLRB was spun off as a separate association after the National Association of Independent Insurers merged with the Alliance of American Insurers to form the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America. PLRB had been affiliated with the Alliance.

PLRB General Counsel and Vice President Len Murphy said as a researcher, Mallin made the organization the “go-to resource” in the United States for coverage opinions and case law updates. As president, he expanded PLRB’s services with a bigger national education conference, three new adjuster regional conferences and a large loss conference.
